Overview of Organoids (TDC)
Conventional in vitro culture has historically been based on two-dimensional (2D) adherent cell cultures and suspension cultures. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in the development of three-dimensional (3D) culture systems, including those derived from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells and human cancer cells. These, commonly referred to as organoids, are capable of recapitulating the structural and functional characteristics of in vivo organs and tissues – characteristics that are difficult to replicate using traditional 2D culture and suspension culture approaches.
These organoids provide a powerful platform for applications in developmental biology, physiology, pharmacological research and regenerative medicine.
